Many married couples that have successfully been married 20 or more years decide to have a vow renewal ceremony to celebrate their marriage. A vow renewal ceremony at Ocean Isle Inn says, “Yes! I’ll marry you all over again!”
Some couples choose to reaffirm their commitment to each other after coming through a rough period in their marriage. There are many different reasons to want to have a vow renewal and all of them are very valid reasons.
Who Will Host This Event?
Most already married couples host their own vow renewal ceremony. A newer trend is the couple’s closest friends, perhaps the original maid of honor and best man, hosting the event at a location of their choosing.
Where To Hold It?
You can renew your vows just about anywhere — in a church, at home, on Ocean Isle Beach in NC, in a public garden or park, on a mountaintop or on a cruise. Anywhere that is special to the two of you will be a perfect location.
Will We Need An Officiant?
A vow renewal isn’t a legally binding ceremony like a wedding is. Anyone can officiate a vow renewal ceremony. Ask a member of the clergy, your children or other relative or a close friend if they would officiate over the day’s events. We’re sure they’ll be delighted.
Who Should We Invite?
A vow renewal can be just the two of you and your witnesses or it can be a grand event with lots of friends and family in attendance. If you prefer, it’s perfectly ok to invite just close family and friends who’ve known you for many years. But it’s equally acceptable to have a large gathering that you invite your extended family and a wider circle of friends to. Pretty much, whatever you want goes.
What Do We Wear?
Dress up or dress casual – it’s your renewal ceremony so whatever you decide goes. If you’re the bride, you could wear your original wedding gown or choose another dress if the event is more formal. A simple sundress would be perfect for a casual ceremony. You could skip the veil and just wear a hat or flowers in your hair.
The groom could wear a tuxedo or suit (or uniform if you’re in the military). Or choose something new and different for this celebration following the bride’s lead for formality in attire. You don’t want to show up in shorts and sandals if she’s wearing a wedding gown.
Do We Need Attendants?
Attendants aren’t needed for a vow renewal or commitment ceremony, but your original bridesmaids and groomsmen may stand up for you. Let them dress more casually this time around. Some couples choose to have their children and grandchildren involved in the ceremony.
A vow renewal ceremony is very similar to a wedding. You will exchange vows using the same vows as when you were first married or entirely new vows. It’s your choice. Following the vows you will exchange rings. These can be your original bands with new engravings or new rings purchased for the reaffirmation. You may ask children, close relatives or special friends to do readings while having music playing in the background.
A reception following the ceremony is all about celebrating the event. It can be any style from a casual cookout in someone’s backyard to a full-on catered event in a hotel ballroom. There can be champagne, dancing, even a wedding cake. Consider displaying your original wedding photo album so you can take guests on a trip down memory lane. Don’t forget to hire a photographer or put one of your close friends or family members in charge of taking photographs.
